Title: Career Preference among University Students of Mass Communication in Nigeria

Abstract: The study investigated the career choice among students of mass communication in Nigerian universities. The study adopted quantitative survey method of communication research to gather data from six (6) sampled public universities across Nigeria. It focused on the final year B.Sc students of mass communication in Nigerian pioneer public universities that started mass communication academic programmes in the six geo-political zones. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in analyzing the data. The findings indicated that Broadcast journalism, public relations and print journalism are found to be the major mass communication professions preferred by the students. Equally, core and elective departmental courses, core and elective general studies courses and two month SIWES attended by the students are the major factors of university system of mass communication education that motivate the student’s career choice. The study concluded that the most preferred professions by students of mass communication in Nigeria are public relations, broadcast journalism and print journalism. It was recommended that the stakeholders of these professions should prepare to accommodate the teaming potential university mass communication graduates that will build their career after graduation.
