This article examined the political intrigues surrounding the emergence of Boko Haram and the impacts of citizen journalism. It has attempted to establish a Remote Cause Analysis (RCA) through a Discursive Analytical Approach (DAA) in which the contents of books, articles, and news about Boko Haram were evaluated. The article examined the origins, the funding and the political issues surrounding the activities of Boko Haram in the North east of Nigeria and the inability of government to tackle them. The paper tried to show that citizen journalism is very instrumental to the flow of news about Boko Haram insurgency and other security challenges in Nigeria. The paper revealed that while the sect utilizes the tools of citizen journalism (Example: Smart Phone, Internet, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, SMS etc.), citizens could as well use the platform to play a greater role of reporting issues about the sect such that could help security operatives to foil plans of attacks. The paper also recommends greater patriotism to the nation as a way of ensuring cooperation of citizens against Boko Haram. It also recommends government to convict suspected sponsors of the sect to prove proactive efforts. |
