Title: Co-Viewing Influence of Ethnic-Oriented Videos: An Examination of In-Group and Out-Group Exposure to Select Nigerian Movie

Abstract: This paper investigated the influence of co-viewing of ethnic oriented Nigerian movies in-group and out-group audience. Among the objectives of study were to ascertain in-group members perceived similarities between what is portrayed in the select movie and the reality; to examine the in-group members’ perception of major character roles and display in the movie as normal or exaggerated; and to find out the in-group and out-group members attitudes towards the select movie. The survey method was used in studying 300 respondents. The study found among others, that personal reactions to movie were both dependent on the type of co-viewing situation and the content as well. The study recommended that the negative aspects of life should not outweigh the positive side of existence as portrayed in ethnic oriented movies.
