Title: Community Journalism and Sustenance of Democratic Ideals In Nigeria

Abstract: In this paper, the importance of community journalism in the sustenance of democratic ideals in Nigeria is discussed. Using available literature and essay materials to prove that through community journalism, crime at the grassroots’ level can be prevented while proper adoption of civic education, cross gender dialogue, cultural literacy among other things can be harnessed for developmental purposes. This paper holistically takes a look at community media and new media technology with particular emphasis on the effect of educating and mobilising cogent memoranda at the grassroots’ level on issues of national importance. Using Democratic Participant and Development Media Theories to analyse the importance of community journalism in Nigeria, recommendations are made on how government and individuals can invest more on community media for betterment of the practice in Nigeria.
