Abstract: |
This study was aimed at ascertaining audience perception of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the African Independence Television (AIT) contributions toward the entrenchment of good governance in South East, Nigeria. The survey research method was usedto execute the study. Residents of the five states (Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo) in the South-East zone of Nigeria constituted the population of study from where a sample of 400 was drawn using the Taro Yamane sample size determination formula. The questionnaire was used as data collection instrument. Using the multi-stage sampling technique, findings revealed that 94% of the respondents adjudged AIT as often exposing corrupt activities in government while only 6% of the respondents indicated that NTA has performed well in that regard; 90.7% of the respondents perceive AIT as often opposing unpopular policies and programmes of government more than NTA; 95.5% of the respondents perceive AIT as often highlighting the weaknesses of government institutions, and finally, 96.7% see AIT as often advocating for transparency and accountability in governance more that NTA. It was therefore recommended amongst others that NTA must as a matter of necessity perform one of its cardinal social responsibilities by maximally contributing to the entrenchment of good governance in Nigeria. This responsibility can be performed by exposing corruption in government, advocating for transparency and accountability in governance, and others. |
