Title: Evaluation of Teaching Techniques Influence on Mass Communication Students’ Choice of Area of Specialisaton

Abstract: Mass Communication is often describd as ‘one course with many professions or carrer options’. Among these areas are Broadcasting, Print Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Film Production, Book Publishing, among others. This study evaluated the influence of teaching techniques in students’choice of areas of specialisation in this multi-disciplionary field. The study was anchored on the Individual Differences Theory. The survey research method was adopted. The population consisted of all 300 and 400 level students of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam campus estimated at 330 according the Academic Planning Unit of the institution. Findings show that teaching techniques of Mass Communication lecturers of the i the Mass Communication students’ choice of career is influenced by these teaching techniques. The outcome of this research shows that the teaching techniques of the Mass Communication lecturers in the institution influence the students’ choice of career to a large extent.The negative impact of this finding is that some lecturers’ teaching techniques discourage some students from their dream career choices. The study recommends constant self-development of communication teachers and periodic self-assessment on their teaching techniques for better impact on the students.
