Title: Harnessing Indigenous Media for Enhanced Community Development: An Exploration
Author(s): Patrick Ukim Ineji
Abstract: The paper expresses concern over attempts by the Western World, typified by Western Europe and North America to undermine indigenous media system. This tendency to view African media of communication with disdain has the propensity to erode our dignity and pride of our very existence as a people. It stresses the crucial role played by this system of communication which has sustained the African communal living from time immemorial. Indigenous media is seen as the pivot around which the development aspirations of the people are realised. Challenges confronting the unorthodox media system are highlighted and recommendations made to the effect that a convenient marriage between the two major systems - indigenous and modern should be encouraged for the overall benefit of the people.
