Title: ICTs, Social Media and Nigeria’s National Development: Issues, Problems And Prospects

Abstract: The emergence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is a welcome development because of the great transformation they have brought to the communication industry. These great innovations have made information to be easily accessed and disseminated any time, any where. However, there is a growing fear that the old media under great threat among them, the danger of losing patronage as many people now read news online instead of buying newspapers and magazines. This work examines the key issues, the problems and the prospects of ICTs and social media use, as they relate to Nigeria’s national development. The study was anchored on the Use and Gratification and Selective Factor Theories. From the findings, it recommends sustained greater efforts towards monitoring of the new technology for greater gain.
