Broadcasting is primarily a medium for prompt delivery of information through carefully designed and selected programmes covering news, information, and music among others. However, issues facings broadcasting in Nigeria such as media ownership and control, poor programming, news commercialisation and regulatory inconsistency have threatened its role as a critical agent of the national communication policy which advocates national integration and development within the ambits of fairness and equitability. Thus, this paper reviewed the state of broadcasting and broadcast policies vis-a-vis the national communication policy of Nigeria within the ambiance of the social responsibility and development theories of the media and establishes the need for a significant convergence that accommodates all operators in the interest of national integration and development. It concluded that the NBC must realign itself with the objectives of the national communication policy particularly with regards to its regulatory role to reflect itself as a fair arbiter in broadcast regulations in Nigeria and contribute to a healthy society. |
