Title: Influence of Television Programmes on Children Cognitive Development in Selected Junior Secondary Schools in Kwara State, Nigeria

Abstract: This study investigated the Influence of Television Programmes on Children Cognitive Development in Kwara Central Senatorial District of Kwara State, Nigeria. The study examined the interest of children on television programmes, nature of the impact of the programme on children, knowledge acquired from such Programme. The study therefore adopted a descriptive survey research design and the instruments used wastructured questionnaire administered to the students of some selected secondary schools in Kwara Central Senatorial district comprises of Ilorin South, Ilorin East, Ilorin West, Asa and Moro Local Governments. The study adopted a simple random sampling technique to select the sample for the study. Descriptive statistics methods were used to analyse the collected data. Findings from the study revealed that level of interest of the majority of the respondents representing 331 (66%) was extremely high, 252 (50.4%) respondents watched cartoon and 295 (59.0%) respondents experienced behavioural effect from watching children television programmes. The following recommendations were made. Television stations should endeavor to design programmes that will give children utmost benefits in cognitive development rather than programmes that provide them mere entertainment.
