Title: International News Agencies and the Concept of News as Commodity: Appraising the Developed and the Developing Nations Perspectives

Abstract: The paper takes a holistic view at the concept of news and settled that news as perceived by different individuals, groups, organizations and nations will remain contentious and in so far as interests, yearnings and preferences of the foregoing differ. News as a commodity is facing serious competition in a free market place of idea within the context of social responsibility concept.It is the view of this paper that the so-called charge of bias and prejudice by the third world countries against the developed countries is sometimes uncalled for as negativity is a crucial factor in news determinant in both developed and developing nations. The paper however makes useful recommendations that would alleviate the hostility. It challenges third world countries to imbibe strong political will by investing resources in communication facilities so as to bridge or narrow the communication gap between the developed and developing nations.
