Title: Mass Communication as a Social Scientific Enquiry: An Analysis of a Clear Nexus
Author(s): Muhammad S. Rabiu
Abstract: On Thursday, February 26, 2015, the Senate of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) formally approved the relocation of the Department of Mass Communication from the Faculty of Arts, after ten years of squatting, to the Faculty of Social Sciences. Since then, students and many interested observers have been asking the question “Why?”. Since the purpose of academia is to unravel knotty issues, widen horizons and uplift eye sights, this paper digs into various sources to throw light on the issue. Through documentary analysis, this discussion finds that although the discipline remains largely eclectic (made up of what seems best of varied sources) and multidisciplinary, the academic home of Mass Communication is the Social Science, as asserted by scholars like Severin and Tankard (1979), Babatunde Folarin (1998), Fedler, Bender, Davenport & Drager (2005), Dennis MacQuail (2006) and Eserinune Mojaye (2009). Therefore, the paper demonstrates that Mass Communication has definite and durable associations with the social sciences.
