Title: Political Thuggery and the Challenge of Electioneering during the 2019 General Elections in Nigeria
Author(s): Reuben SARKI & Agatha ORJI-EGWU
Abstract: This study discussed the thread political thuggery poses to the future of elections in Nigeria. The study notes that, since electioneering in the past in Nigeria in most cases has been characterised by violent killings, which is as a result of lack of internal party democracy, the case may likely be the same in 2019. Suffice it to say that the proliferations of fire arms in the country has become synonymous with possessing voter’s card, with the fall out of it (political thuggery) to‘arm banditry;’ election periods are now wrought with fear, anxiety, hate speeches and desperation among the political class as they seek electoral mandates. Through exegetic interrogation of Nigeria’s electioneering, the study observed that electioneering in Nigeria has been marred by contradictions that threatened the nations’ political stability, hence the exegetical examination through the social conflict theory; where the paper submitted that the menace (Political thuggery) vitiates the prospect of sustainable democracy in the country.
