The rapid growth of social media platforms in recent years has dramatically altered the way people access and share information. These platforms have become the Internet’s new building blocks that are changing the nature of our social relationships in ways never imagined before. With the continuous evolution of these social media platforms in the contemporary digital era, researchers show curiosity in investigating how and why these platforms affect socio-cultural, political and economic activities of the modern societies. The motivation of the current study was to investigate university students’ motive, behaviour, attitude, perception and satisfaction of using Facebook as one of the most outstanding global social media platform. Data was collected was from one hundred and thirty one students of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University students using convenient and purposive sampling. Moreover, descriptive statistics was used to analyze the collected by employing Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The study found university students were using Facebook for different motives which include academic purposes, socialization (M = 4.02, SD = 2.12). In terms of their attitude towards using Facebook, it was found that university students have favourable attitude towards it, as they are comfortable using it and it help them in their academic activities (M = 4.28, SD = 1.94). Moreover, university students were found to have a positive perception on Facebook as a social media platform which helps them to interact with their peers, which is also accurate (M = 3.92, SD = 2.13). This study is limited to a particular Nigerian university it therefore recommends further similar studies to be carried out in other Nigerian universities with a view to have bases for generalizing its findings. |
