Author(s): Ayooluwa AJASA & Samuel OKERE
Abstract: Growth is a phenomenon, a decline is also in itself a stage in the life circle of a phenomenon, but when the decline is unusually higher than growth as in the Nigeria newspaper industry, and it calls for examination. This paper examined major topical issues affecting the growth of newspaper organisations in Nigeria. Using conceptual review, issues on media ownership, media leadership, economic clime, professional ethics, staff welfare, newspaper distributors/agents influence, internet influence and government harassment of journalists and media organisation were discussed. It was established that any media organisation which fails to respond to the issues positively will find growth a difficult task. In view of this therefore, the paper, concludes that media owners, government and other stakeholders must be proactive and faithfully play their parts, as the growth and sustainability of newspaper business is a necessity for the benefit of the investors and the society at large.
