Abstract: |
Background: The ritual approach to communication emphasises the symbolic, cultural, and performative dimensions of communicative practices within societies. Rooted in James Carey’s theoretical framework, this perspective views communication as a process that shapes societal beliefs and values through repetitive, symbolic actions. Nigeria, a culturally diverse nation, is rich in rituals that foster social cohesion and preserve cultural identity.
Objective: This study explores the manifestation of ritual communication in Nigerian cultural festivals, religious practices, political events, and everyday interactions. It aims to highlight how these rituals reinforce communal bonds, perpetuate shared values, and maintain indigenous knowledge systems.
Method: The study adopts a secondary data collection method, involving a comprehensive review of existing literature, internet resources, and library materials.
Result: Rituals such as the Osun-Osogbo Festival and traditional greetings play a crucial role in bridging ethnic, religious, and social divides in Nigeria. The findings suggest that ritual communication not only preserves the nation's cultural heritage but also ensures the continuity of indigenous knowledge systems, fostering cultural identity and social cohesion.
Conclusion: Ritual communication is vital in maintaining Nigeria’s cultural diversity, social memory, and communal harmony. By participating in these ritualistic practices, individuals reinforce their cultural identities and resist cultural homogenisation.
Recommendation: It is essential to value and perpetuate traditional rituals in Nigeria to ensure societal harmony, cultural diversity, and the transmission of social memory across generations.
