Title: Social Media and Women’s Rights Activism: Analysis of Senator Abbo Elijah’s Alleged Assault on a woman at an Abuja Sex Toy Shop

Abstract: This study explored how people utilize the social media for women rights activism. The objectives of the study were to; determine the thematic issues raised by Facebook and YouTube users on Senator Abbo Elisha’s assault scandal. Analyse the texts that promote the rights of women on Facebook and Youtube from Senator Abbo’s assault scandal. This study is anchored on the public sphere theory and based on the content analysis method in which Facebook and YouTube comments on Senator Elisha Abbo’s physical assault case were analysed. This study found out that netizens raised the thematic issues of corruption and power abuse, unjustifiable crime. The analysis also shows that there is serios advocacy for women’s right and activism for positive change in the change in the nation. This study concludes that citizens make use of the social media as a tool to advocate for the protection of women rights and other issues in other spheres of life. The study recommended that online communities have a voice and can cause tangible change, hence, commenters should intensify their clamour for positive change in women rights as social media activism will go a long way to cause change in the society.
