Abstract: The role of public relations (PR) in resolving conflicts is awash in academic studies. However, not many of such studies have focused on the option of employing public relations approaches in winning parental consent in inter-tribal marriages among the Igbos of Nigeria. To bridge this gap, this paper reports on a survey of 40 inter-tribal couples residing in the South Eastern (Igbo land) part of Nigeria. The results show that parents find it difficult to consent to inter-tribal marriages because of differences in culture and tradition, religion, differences in spoken languages, geographical distance, and fear of pollution of lineage and importation of different cultural values. The study however notes that application of subtle public relations tactics such as persuasions, dialogues, gifts, and third party interventions are time-tested options for resolving such differences.
